Since the 2003–2004 academic year, it has operated as an independent university under the name Akmola University of Technology and Business.

On 26 March 2008, the university was renamed Kazakh University of Technology and Business. KazUTB became the only specialised higher education institution in Astana and the Akmola region for training competitive professionals for the food, light, petrochemical, and hospitality industries.

The university carries out educational activity according to state licence series AB No. 0064024 in higher and postgraduate education without limitation of validity, issued by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan on 16.07.2008.
