To prepare competitive and in-demand specialists, to develop educational and research activities, to introduce innovative technologies aimed at solving current industrial, technological, and environmental challenges, and to contribute to sustainable development and the strengthening of the economic potential of the region and the country.
The implementation of this objective is carried out within the framework of the Department’s Mission, which is focused on forming a modern model of professional education oriented toward current challenges and trends in science and technology. It is based on the integration of education, science, and industry, the development of students’ professional and research competencies, and the continuous improvement of the quality of educational services in accordance with international standards.
The Department has traditionally focused on the integration of education, research, and industry. Its development has been guided by distinguished scholars and educational leaders.
2003–2010. During the formative years of the Department, it was headed by Professor Bolat Toleukhanuly Yermaganbet, Doctor of Chemical Sciences. Under his leadership, the fundamental foundations of educational and research activities were established, a qualified academic staff was formed, and in 2008 a Master’s program in the scientific and pedagogical track of the educational program “Chemical Technology of Organic Substances” was launched.
2010–2016. The Department was headed by PhD Gulnar Murzakanovna Nurgazina. During this period, the Department focused on the implementation of modern international educational standards and the development of the research potential of young scientists.
2016–2022. The Department was led by Ainagul Kolpek, Candidate of Chemical Sciences and Associate Professor. This stage was characterized by the active development of practice-oriented education, the strengthening of partnerships with industry and business organizations, and the introduction of the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs 6B07254 Oil and Gas Engineering and 6B07219 Mining Engineering.
From 2022 to the present. The Department has been headed by PhD Zhadyra Tastenbekkyzy Nurtai. Under her leadership, the Department continues to enhance its educational programs in accordance with digital transformation processes and the evolving demands of the modern labor market.
The Department is a structural unit of the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technologies and offers a wide range of educational programs.

Strengthening Human Resources Capacity. The proportion of academic staff holding advanced scientific degrees is 65%. The Department ensures continuity between generations by combining the extensive experience of established scientific schools with the potential of young researchers and PhD holders.
Industry Integration. Stakeholders actively participate in the development of educational programs and the educational process. Key partners include LLP Institute of Chemistry, Coal and Technology, LLP ECOService S, the Republican Research Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Trance Alliance Service, LLP Tau-Ken Altyn, KazGeoMap, LLP Research and Production Association “Energy-Saving Technologies,” the Kazakhstan Branch of Schlumberger Logelco Inc., Karachaganak Petroleum Operating, JSC SyrdaryaMunai, and JSC AstanaGasService. Such cooperation directly contributes to the employability and competitiveness of graduates.
Development of an Inclusive Educational Environment. The Department actively promotes inclusive education and develops Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), thereby contributing to the University’s mission of ensuring access to high-quality education.
Thus, the history of the Department of Chemistry, Chemical Technology and Ecology is a story of continuous growth, scientific achievement, and dedication to its mission. The training of highly qualified and competitive specialists for the Republic of Kazakhstan remains one of the Department’s key priorities. The Department of Chemistry, Chemical Technology and Ecology makes a significant contribution to the development of the university through strengthening human resources, improving the educational environment, and enhancing cooperation with the industrial sector.
The department has a strong academic staff potential, with a degree-holding rate of 65%. Continuity between generations is ensured through an effective combination of the long-term experience of senior academics and the scientific potential of young researchers and PhD holders.
An important direction of the department’s activity is the integration of education, science, and industry. The department actively cooperates with leading enterprises and organizations of Kazakhstan, including RG Gold LLP, Institute of Chemistry, Coal and Technology LLP, ECOSERVICE S LLP, the Republican Research Institute for Occupational Safety, Trance Alliance Service, Tau-Ken Altyn LLP, KazGeoMap, Scientific and Production Association “Energy Saving Technologies”, the Schlumberger Logelco Inc. branch in the Republic of Kazakhstan, Karachaganak Petroleum Operating B.V., SyrdaryaMunai JSC, and AstanaGasService JSC. Representatives of these organizations participate in the development of educational programs, delivery of classes, organization of internships, and assessment of training quality, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of graduates in the labor market.
RG Gold LLP annually provides educational grants for students of the Mining Engineering educational program, covering tuition expenses and encouraging academic achievement and professional development. This initiative strengthens the link between the industrial sector and higher education and contributes to the formation of a qualified workforce reserve for the mining industry.
The department actively develops a modern educational environment by implementing inclusive education principles and designing massive open online courses. This ensures accessibility of quality education and supports the strategic objectives of the university.

The research activity of the department is at a high level, with approximately 50% of faculty members holding a Hirsch index. Research results are integrated into the educational process through the development of elective courses. Faculty members and students annually participate in international scientific and practical conferences held in both Kazakhstan and abroad.

A.A. Zeynullin is Doctor of TechnicalSciences, Professor, Academician of the Kazakhstan National Academy of Natural Sciences, Academician of the National Engineering Academy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. He is the author of more than 80 scientific works, including 6 pre-patents and patents and 5 teaching manuals. For his outstanding contributions to science, education, and the training of highly qualified specialists, he has been awarded numerous state and departmental honors, including the Order of Parasat, the Order of Kurmet, the “Honorary Worker of Education” badge of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and the badge “For Contribution to the Development of Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan.”
Kh.B. Omarov is Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, Honorary Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and author of more than 200 scientific publications and 21 inventor’s certificates. He is the recipient of the badges “For Contribution to the Development of Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan” and “Honorary Worker of Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan,” as well as the State Scientific Scholarship awarded to scientists and specialists who have made an outstanding contribution to the development of science and technology.
N.T. Smailova is Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, Academician of the International Academy of Engineering Sciences (IAES), and Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. She was awarded the “Best University Teacher” grant in 2016, the badge “For Contribution to the Development of Science of Kazakhstan” (2010), the Minister of Education and Science’s Letter of Appreciation (2020), and a scholarship from the Mayor of Chongqing Municipal People’s Government (People’s Republic of China) under the Silk Road Project for training in advanced materials. She is the author of 2 monographs, more than 70 scientific publications, including 10 papers published in international scientific journals, 6 of which are indexed in the Thomson Reuters database, as well as 14 inventor’s certificates and innovation patents of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Ye.E. Zhatkanbayev is Doctor of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor, and Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Mining Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan. He has been awarded the commemorative badge marking the 10th Anniversary of NAC Kazatomprom JSC, the badges “For Contribution to the Development of Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan” and “For Contribution to the Development of Industry of the Republic of Kazakhstan,” as well as a Certificate of Honor from the Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan. He is the author of more than 20 invention patents, 3 monographs, 1 textbook, 1 teaching manual, and over 60 scientific publications.
E.M. Suleimen is Candidate of Chemical Sciences, Professor, and a distinguished researcher in the fields of natural compounds chemistry, phytochemistry, biotechnology, and chemical technology. He is the author of more than 420 scientific works, including over 100 publications in journals indexed in the international databases Scopus and Web of Science, monographs and books, and more than 40 patents for inventions and utility models. Under Professor Suleimen’s leadership, three modern research laboratories have been established at the university, providing facilities for world-class fundamental and applied research in chemistry, biotechnology, and chemical technology. He has been awarded the state grant “Best University Teacher,” the Matsumae Foundation Medal (Japan), and numerous departmental and public awards for his contribution to the advancement of science and education.
N.U. Nurgaliyev is Candidate of Chemical Sciences, Professor, Corresponding Member of the Kazakhstan National Academy of Natural Sciences, and Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the scientific journal Vestnik of KazUTB. He is the recipient of the badge “For Contribution to the Development of Science of Kazakhstan” (2012) awarded by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan, as well as a Letter of Appreciation from the Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan (2023) for his significant contribution to the development of education and science, high professionalism, and dedicated service.
