Mission of the Department
The mission of the Department of Tourism and Service is to educate a new generation of professionals for the tourism, hospitality, and HoReCa industries through the integration of education, research, and industry practice, the implementation of innovative educational technologies, sustainable development principles, and international quality standards in education.

Key Areas of Professional Training
Educational Activities
The educational process of the Department is based on the principles of practice-oriented learning and close cooperation with employers. Special emphasis is placed on the development of students’ professional competencies through industrial internships, traineeships, field-based classes, masterclasses delivered by industry professionals, and participation in real sector-oriented projects.
One of the key priorities is the development of dual education. This approach combines theoretical training at the university with practical experience at enterprises in the tourism industry, hospitality, and restaurant business. Such a model contributes to the rapid adaptation of graduates to the labor market and enhances their overall competitiveness.
The Department of Tourism and Service was established as a result of the reorganization of the Department of Management and Tourism by the decision of the Academic Council, Minutes No. 6, dated January 31, 2022.
Main Stages of Development and Achievements of the Department
SIGNIFICANT EVENTS AND CONTRIBUTION TO UNIVERSITY DEVELOPMENT:
In October 2024, the “Barista-Bartender” specialized practice-oriented training classroom was opened at the Department of Tourism and Service with the support of the Government of the Republic of Türkiye and the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA).
The opening of this training classroom made an important contribution to strengthening the university’s material and technical base, enhancing international cooperation, and creating modern conditions for practice-oriented training of future specialists in tourism and service.
In December 2025, the “Barista” micro-qualification program was implemented, and international certificates were awarded to students. The program was carried out with the support of TİKA, Rixos President Astana Hotel, and industry partners. During the training, students mastered modern technologies of coffee preparation and service, demonstrated a high level of professional training, and acquired practical skills in demand within the hospitality industry. The implementation of this program contributed to the development of practice-oriented education, the expansion of international cooperation, and the improvement of students’ competitiveness, strengthening the university’s position as a platform for innovative educational initiatives.
In January 2026, the faculty members of the Department of Tourism and Service completed practical training at the Zhumabaktas hotel complex within the professional development program organized by JT Hospitality School. During the training, the main business processes of a hotel enterprise were studied, including guest service standards, housekeeping operations, hotel room equipment, and modern approaches to service quality management. The knowledge and practical skills gained contribute to enhancing the professional competencies of lecturers and improving practice-oriented training of students in tourism, hospitality, and service programs.
In February 2026, the Department of Tourism and Service made a significant contribution to the establishment of the regional educational-industrial cluster “Hospitality and Tourism” with the support of the Akimat of Astana on the basis of the Service and Tourism College. The project is implemented within the Roadmap for the transformation of technical and vocational education in the Republic of Kazakhstan and is aimed at strengthening cooperation between education and industry, as well as preparing in-demand specialists for the hospitality sector.
In April 2026, the KazUTB Stars team representing the Tourism educational program won 3rd place at the XVIII Republican Student Subject Olympiad in Tourism. This achievement confirmed the high level of training, creativity, and competitiveness of the program. In addition, students of the “Restaurant Business and Hotel Management” program won 2nd place in the team ranking at the same Olympiad, demonstrating strong professional preparation of future HoReCa specialists and strengthening the university’s position among leading institutions.
In May 2026, a student of the “Restaurant Business and Hotel Management” program, Arnur Aubakirov, represented Kazakhstan at the International Young Chefs Tournament named after Yunus Akhmetzyanov in Kazan, where he received the “Guardian of Traditions” nomination and took 2nd place overall. This achievement enhanced the university’s international reputation and demonstrated the high level of student training.
In May 2026, the faculty of the Department of Tourism and Service participated in a field-based training seminar held in one of the most picturesque natural areas of the Akmola region — the “Sokolinye Gory” (Falcon Mountains) area. The seminar topic was “Techniques and Tactics of Active Tourism,” organized by the Center for Children and Youth Tourism and Local Studies. During the seminar, participants improved their practical skills in active tourism, studied modern approaches to organizing tourist routes and ensuring safety in natural environments. Special attention was given to rope-based activities, mountain movement techniques, and teamwork development. Participation in the seminar contributed to expanding the professional competencies of faculty members and enriching practical experience to be applied in the educational process.
At the Department of Tourism and Service, modern educational technologies are actively implemented, including digital learning platforms, interactive teaching methods, case studies, project-based technologies, and multimedia resources. This approach ensures a high level of student engagement, a practice-oriented learning process, and the development of in-demand professional competencies that meet the current requirements of the tourism and hospitality industry.
Within disciplines such as “Electronic Reservation and Booking Systems,” “Restaurant Business,” “Hospitality Management,” “Bar Operations,” and other specialized courses, modern licensed industry software is used, including R-Keeper, Opera (Protel/ProOtel), and Shelter. Their application enables students to master real digital tools for managing hotel and restaurant operations, booking systems, accounting, and service process automation. This ensures a high level of practical training, professional competence, and graduate competitiveness in the labor market.
The Department of Tourism and Service operates 6 branch units established on the basis of leading enterprises in the tourism and hospitality industry, where the dual education system is implemented.
These branch units function at major organizations such as the Rixos Hotel Group, Zhumabaktas, Touristyk Kamkor, as well as the Center for Children and Youth Tourism and Local Studies, among other partner enterprises in the industry.
These branches ensure the integration of theoretical training with practical experience, allowing students to gain professional skills directly in real production environments and contributing to the development of highly competitive specialists demanded by the labor market. The practice base includes more than 50 major enterprises in the tourism and hospitality sector. Department partners actively participate in the development and updating of educational programs, organization of industrial internships and traineeships, implementation of dual education, as well as conducting masterclasses, guest lectures, and professional training sessions. Such cooperation ensures a strong connection between the educational process and labor market requirements and contributes to the successful employment of graduates.
Faculty members and students are actively involved in research projects, conferences, competitions, publication activities, and the development of innovative solutions for the tourism and hospitality industry.
